crisp green suit and many of his friends
and lovers weeping goodbye at the door

of grampa's letters from the front saying
all was well the
Hun was in retreat
home by new years
we'll have em beat

the glow of the city lights warmed them
as they walked
the boardwalk by the river
it'll be
short campaign home by spring

they danced to Jolson on the box
the night before he said goodbye
they had danced the foxtrot, he promised to improve
he left , with a twinkle in his eye
