On their eighth album, Pony Tales, Rome 56 proves that Arthur Lamonica—who once penned hits for The Shirts at CBGB—still has plenty to say. These stories swing from future-gazing anthems (One Way Ticket) to sci-fi dreamscapes (The Last Man Standing), with melodic rock that knows when to floor it and when to ease off the gas. Knopfler-esque guitar lines weave through lush keyboards while Lamonica's vocals carry that Costello-like bite that cuts through the prettiness. Recorded between New York and Amsterdam, it's a record that refuses to stay in one place—geographically or sonically—from a band that looks forward, sideways and deep within.

Rome 56 is vintage yet new. It is yellow and weathered yet crisp and fresh. It combines an old and new feel - almost as if refurbished. I can see Hunter S Thompson sitting front row at one of these shows.
