The Redshank is a familiar residential coastal bird seen around most of the British Isles. It was a bird held in high regard by the ancient races of Scotland. Its pi-pi-liu birdsong is a plaintive call believed to have been the basis for a lamentation for the dead. In flight, weaving over land and sea, the Redshank was also seen as a symbol of the passing over from this world to the next for the departed.
