On their 1995 debut album, released on Southern records. Rex lays the groundwork for the melancholy introspection they’d go on to perfect. But even in the nascent days of their career, Rex’s sound appears fully formed—skeletal guitar lines, submerged vocals, and moaning strings lurk in the crevices of grungy power chords and barreling hand drums. Clocking in at 51 minutes, the eight-song record is a slow burn of calculated ennui. It isn’t until the final track, the Magritte-esque “This is a Recording,” that the band lets loose in an eruption of guitar distortion and guttural screams. Even when the dust settles, Rex maintains the restrained urgency that sets them apart.
