Thanksgiving Eve from Autumn Sketchbook by Pumpkin Friend
Like a handful of the recordings in this collection, these next two are just very casual, open-ended, at-home improvisations that for me capture a certain mood or atmosphere.
Night Rogues/Bullseye

One of the older recordings offered here, Night Rogues/Bullseye is a slow, bluesy meditation on my steel-string acoustic (most of the guitar playing on this project is on my classical). I have no specific memory of recording it, so when I heard it anew it was like discovering a lost moment back in time—kind of like a “found” recording, but of my own (a rare instance when I actually like having a bad memory).
“Home” seems to be another reoccurring theme in this collection—both a yearning for my childhood home and a capturing of the warmth of my current home of the past 10+ years. You can hear my then four-year-old son playing in the background, toward the end exclaiming “Bullseye,” referring to the character from the Toy Story movies.

Thanksgiving Eve is from the same day as Purple Leaves and Autumn Avenue. An improvisation that loosely attempts to mimic the styles of some modern classical guitar pieces I like, I’ve come to associate this with Night Rogues/Bullseye, as a pair, because on the day this was recorded I experimented with adding spoken-word poems to each one.
Ultimately, I decided I liked the recordings better without the poems, but this is why they are named what they are.
