Lyrics
I walk another block before passing in front of a familiar store. It is Video Stop, a movie rental shop that closed many years ago.
As I pass, I look inside the windows and see it is somehow still open. But, time is catching up to my dreamed-up version of the store. All over the store are signs advertising a going out of business sale. There is very little inventory on the racks, but large bins in the center of the store are bursting with old stock.
I spot a heavily discounted copy of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back on DVD in the window and decide to see if there are any other interesting titles.
Inside I am greeted to a much bleaker scene than what I experienced at the adult video store. There is just one customer and two employees in the entire establishment. The customer is reading the back of a DVD box in one corner and the two employees are conversing in the center of the store.
None of them take notice of me as I enter.
I look around, pick up a few boxes, but my attention is quickly drawn to a sight outside the windows.
I can see on the right edge of the windows a giant, grey full-moon shape moving low across the horizon, arching gently upwards as it nears the center of my view.
I put the DVD box down and head outside to investigate. It appears to be about the size of a full moon but it is a duller grey and has concentric circles of black from the center working out to the edge of it.
I watch for about a minute as it moves across the horizon and dips back down as it reaches the edge of my vision before disappearing completely.
Once it is gone from my view I resume my walk home.
As I near the end of the block, I hear a voice that makes me stop dead in my tracks.
The voice is not loud, or aggressive, but what makes me stop is how I hear the voice. It comes from within my own head, yet it also seems to come from without. As if this voice were filling every molecule in the entire world, and possibly beyond, simultaneously.
A man’s voice speaks, firm and clear he says,
“We have been watching your civilization for years and we have decided that you are no longer fit to control your destiny. We will be imposing our own law for the betterment of your society. If you follow our rules, you will be fine. Paradise will be yours. If you cannot, or will not, then your punishment will be immense. We have distributed cards with your names, addresses and contact information on them. You are to correct any mistakes on them, sign them, and keep them with you at all times. Be not afraid.”
