June by Piano in the Woods

In May 2013 a piano was left outdoors in private woodland near Canterbury, UK. Each month for a year the composer Sam Bailey played the piano, improvising in response to the instrument’s changing state.

The Piano in the Woods project ended in May 2014 and now, 10 years later, material from the project will be released each month for a year leading to a book launch, concert and exhibition in May 2025.

'When I returned to the piano after a month I discovered that many of the keys didn't work. The damp weather had made the wood expand. I thought this might happen so I came prepared with things that might coax sound out of the piano: a cappuccino whisk and an e-bow (an electronic bow or electromagnet designed for use with guitars).

What you hear on this recording is me exploring, for the first time, how to make music on a instrument that was changing in response to it's environment'
