Lyrics
It started out so bright and full of purpose
Filling with a wonder that never ends
Few there were that followed to fulfillment
The rest became legitimate
With the hubris that it lends
So I bought myself a ticket to the opera
Sat in upon the sordid little play
I waited for the mournful song of August
With lyrics not a one could sing or say
(chorus)
An evening at the opera
A strained adagio
A passing vain ephemera
A tragic cameo
But a bold contentious actor hit the spotlight
In a language never heard he began to pray
And one among the multitude observing
Stood, then loud and clear was heard to say
“Authority to you was never given
You are walking in another’s guise“
So I waited for the joyful bells of Christmas
But only heard October sighs
(chorus)
The wintertime was long and cold and deadly
Few there were that lived to tell the tale
Bold contentious actor in the spotlight
Stood frozen in another season’s veil
February’s song went on forever
A hundred years of winter give or take a day
With a flourish springtime then invaded
As Aslan’s echoed roar began to fade away
April came rejoicing with a song of life
(chorus)
The director, growing bored, compelled the story
To an artificial non-existent joyful end
But the stage rejected empty allegory
There still remained a mountain that we must ascend
Climbing ever higher
The journey never ends
Rise up beyond the summit
While the audience pretends
