With Shona folk music, it is commonplace for a traditional melody to have multiple lyrics - sometimes giving the same song a very different meaning. Lyrics get adapted or changed to reflect a sentiment or an issue in society at a particular time. Such is the case with this traditional song, Todzungaira / Tadzungaira. When Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, the latter lyrics sung on this recording were composed to celebrate the fact that independence had been won because the people had gone out to fight for their country. Although war is something I’m personally against, the sentiment I wish to impart is that things do not come easily for most in this life. You must be prepared to work hard, sacrifice and fight for the things you want to achieve.
