The majority of humanity was left to rot. It was easier to change ourselves than the systems put in place that consumed us.

Technology had advanced to the point that all manner of creativity was stripped away from the people to be repackaged and resold by algorithms and AI, and automation took over all manner of labor one by one. All the while, as the jobs became fewer, the cost of living rose higher, those in charge smiled and said all was going great. Better than ever.

In order to survive, humans were forced to adapt. It became common in society to change oneself to lessen the gap between the capabilities of humans and machines. Cybernetic enhancements, biological augmentations, genetic engineering. All just a new form of self-expression... Or just another sign of systematic abuse.
