Layers by Open_Music Ensemble

This fourth set is the longest in the LAYERS series to date, featuring four fairly dense ensemble numbers (of 4-7 layers) and four alternate mixes for three of the movements. As was the case in the first two sets (Layers 1 & 2), the alternate versions present simpler, more concise chamber versions of the first tracks, revealing the origins of the musical “threads” which later grew in complexity as musicians added lines. Another difference is that this set include synthesizers on all four principle tracks, whereas the alternatives are entirely played by traditional acoustic instruments. As was the case on Layers 1, three of these titles (“No. 3, No. 4 & No. 5”) originated as solo tracks recorded mid-May by Felix Behringer on clarinet/bass clarinet. Michael Kiedaisch then added vibraphone to No. 3 and two percussion (bass/string drum) tracks to No. 4, to which Roderik Vanderstraeten later played synthesizer on both pieces. Yet later, Felix Borel added a violin track to Behringer’s bass clarinet in No. 5 and swarm of violin lines to No. 3. Finally, Scott Roller contributed a synthesizer sequence and two cello tracks to “No. 5.” “Stream 9” originated as an electronic track by Roller in late April, to which Borel soon added three violin tracks and Scott completed the process with three celli in June.
