Massimo Morganti is a versatile musician, in the sense that Stefano Benni gives to the term: “one who has various talents and loves to distribute them among different challenges and experiments, maintaining total seriousness and uniqueness.” A highly technical and always original trombonist and accordionist, Massimo excels in this work above all as a conductor, composer, and arranger. The pieces together paint a colorful journey through the history of jazz, from Gershwin—reinterpreted with wisdom and respect for the original compositions—to pieces written by contemporary authors and rearranged—what else does a brilliant arranger do?—by Morganti with taste, elegance, and sounds that are sometimes Mediterranean (with lyrics in Basque and Sardinian) and sometimes contemporary. Each episode sounds different from the others, and the famous standards are not distorted as is often done by certain self-styled avant-garde artists lacking in courage and swing, but reinterpreted with skill and a sense of adventure. Among the original songs, Lorea is truly splendid: dynamics ranging from rarefied to dense, in a crescendo of pathos enhanced by Scott Robinson's memorable solo and the class of singer Diana Torto, who then surpasses herself in Mis(s)tango, composed by her: an incredible virtuosity that is never an end in itself but always at the service of music and poetry. Memorable moments, thanks also to all the musicians involved: a vast ensemble of distinguished soloists, high-profile wind and string instruments, all led by the musician from the Marche region with wisdom and deep inspiration.
