Astral by RVLVR

RVLVR’s ‘Astral’ is the second release from NOREMIXES. RVLVR is the new moniker from Philadelphia-based producer James Sauppe. James studied percussion at the prestigious University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is a member of the Actual Records and New Low crews.

‘Astral’ and ‘Earth-Bound’, the two original tracks, showcase James’ songwriting with strong harmonic content which has been a highlight of some of the more beat-centric RVLVR output thus far. Piano and cello are surrounded with swirling effects in the title track, ‘Astral’; but the atmosphere is abruptly interrupted by a 4x4 909, pitched tom, drum machine workout. In ‘Earth-Bound’ a raw piano performance lay underneath a chopped and stutter-effected vocal melody. It is the first release to feature James’ original vocals: which echo a lost George Harrison record.

‘Astral’ also gets a re-working from The Starkville Symphony (aka NOREMIXES owner, Starkey) flipping the harmonic progression but maintaining the original’s strong melody. This epic builder could have been plucked straight from a film score and evokes slow-motion imagery and a darkened concert hall.
