Modernism by Noisecat

1월부터 한 달 동안, 오랫동안 사용해 오던 멀티트랙 테잎 레코더 Fostex Multitracker XR-3로 녹음을 시작했습니다. 더 녹음하고 싶었지만, 결국 열 곡만 남기고 녹음기는 멈춰버렸습니다. RIP. 언젠가 다시 살아날지도 모르겠네요.

다행히 완전히 고장이 나기 전, 작업한 곡들을 모두 스테레오 2트랙으로 컴퓨터에 옮겨두었고, 몇몇 곡에는 기타나 다른 악기를 약간 덧붙였습니다. 하지만 대부분은 마이크 하나와 Rhythm Ace 드럼머신, 베이스, 기타, 그리고 PSS-480 신디사이저만으로 만들어진, ‘미니멀리즘’이라 불러도 좋을 만큼 심플하고, 담백한 곡들입니다.
컴퓨터 없이 테이프에 녹음하다 보니 눈이 아닌 귀와 손의 감각에만 의지해, 복붙이나 편집, 끊어가기 없이 대부분 원테이크로 녹음했는데, (예전에는 누구나 이렇게 했겠죠?) 그런 아날로그 작업은 때로는 지난했지만 동시에 무척 즐겁기도 했습니다.

오랜만에 노이즈캣 이름으로 앨범을 냅니다.
처음에는 제목을 Night Hymns라 정했는데, 100% 만족스럽지는 않았지만 그대로 쓰려고 했습니다. 그러던 중 토마스 헤더윅의 책「더 인간적인 건축」을 접했고, 그때 Modernism이라는 단어가 모든 걸 해소해 주듯 정확히 들어맞는 느낌이 들었어요. 그렇게 이 앨범의 타이틀은 Modernism이 되었고, 책에서 다루는 그 ‘모더니즘’의 의미와도 맞닿아 있습니다.

마스터링 과정을 거치지 않아 다른 음원들보다 음량이 작고, 곡마다 볼륨 차이도 있습니다. 하지만 그것도 앨범이 가진 자연스러운 다이나믹이라 생각해, 있는 그대로 발매하기로 했습니다.

Starting in January, I spent about a month recording onto my long-time companion, the Fostex Multitracker XR-3 cassette recorder. I wanted to record more, but the machine stopped working, leaving me with just these ten tracks, its final gift.

Fortunately, before it broke down completely, I transferred everything to a stereo 2-track on my computer, and on a few songs I added some guitar or other instruments. Still, most remain simple and minimal—made only with a single microphone, a Rhythm Ace drum machine, bass, guitar, and a PSS-480 synthesizer.

Recording onto tape without a computer meant relying only on my ears and hands. With no copy-paste, editing, or cut-and-splice, most of the tracks were captured in a single take. (Maybe that’s how everyone did it back then?) The analog process was sometimes demanding, but also deeply enjoyable.

It has been a while since I released anything under the name Noisecat.
At first, I titled the album Night Hymns, though it never felt fully right, I was simply going to go with it. Then I came across Thomas Heatherwick’s book Humanise, and suddenly the word Modernism felt inevitable, as if it resolved everything at once. That’s how this album found its title. And it can be read in the same sense the book speaks of.

Since the album was not mastered, the overall volume may be lower than other releases, and the levels vary from track to track. But I believe this unevenness is part of the dynamic whole, so I decided to leave it as it is.
