Neural Network by Wintermute
Neuromancer, the seminal novel of cyberpunk heist by William Gibson has influenced a panoply of cultural works ranging from film, to fashion, to real world personas. On Neural Network, Wintermute's EP under No Catharsis, it is a clear and direct well of inspiration.
Kraftwerk-style opener "Black Ice", immediately calls to mind glowing quicksilver grids that outline an arctic city at midnight. As rave pulses ring through, the theme of modern hyperconnectedness unfurls and a leviathan shadow is heard rumbling beneath.
The title track continues the rave, bringing us closer underground into a laser soup, as this tribal acid jam ascends, revealing a hive of phosphorescent brains melded in technofellowship.
"Pulse Waves" paints a cavernous spiral beamed from a pirate radio. Its transmitted excitations electric enough to cure a depressed dystopia. The cyborg DJ utters unintelligible hype, pushing the listener towards a body memory of stuttered transcendence. You can almost taste the synthetic sweat as the trance synths lift you up.
Closer "Panther Moderns", is a sinewy thing that brings the titular feline into this icy undulating club. This beast moves through hardcore, synthwave and outsider dance modes with ease. This is a free, somehow familiar, all embracing anthem that thaws the ultramodern cold with its pulsing jungle warmth.
It is nearly dawn and the neural network is about to disband. Everyone will exit this wireless union but the heat of the beat will continue in their blood.
