Dedicated in part to the late cultural theorist Mark "LIL FISH" Fisher, Drugs & Capitalism is Neon Liberal’s most volatile and visionary work yet — a fractured broadcast from the ruins of a world where vibes have replaced meaning and the future’s been cancelled.
Merging noisy, experimental hip-hop with shattered pop hooks, smoggy jazz textures, and a heavy dose of post-digital chaos, the album moves like a fever dream through the late capitalist psyche. LIL FISH sets the tone with a twitchy, haunted urgency, while HAIL CORPORATE (feat. LUDE JAW & BENOFFICIAL) takes dead-eyed corporate worship to absurdist extremes. SUBURBAN GANSTARS (feat. IQ) drips with irony and unease, and NEW NORMAL (feat. DAS BEHÄLTER) sounds like a job-center meeting melting in slow motion. The sprawling WHITE BLOOD CELLS bleeds into the title track, DRUGS & CAPITALISM (feat. JET PACK DOG), a bass-ridden elegy for hope under algorithmic rule.
Written in the shadow of Fisher’s hauntological thought, this album is both a eulogy and an exorcism — of futures we lost, of selves we can’t quite name, and of the system that numbs us into forgetting.
Written, produced, mixed and mastered by NEON LIBERAL aka Will Barnard.
