Navel-gazing, or omphaloskepsis, is the contemplation of one's navel as an aid to meditation. Actual use of the practice as an aid to contemplate the basic principles of the cosmos and human nature is found in philosophy and many spiritual traditions from around the world. Today, the term is generally used in a derogatory way to refer to excessive focus on oneself, or self-indulgent introspection.
