Striations (KK031) by Steve Roden

Distance Piece was part of a body of work called Stone’s Throw, which was related to my grandmother’s death and in particular, a group of unfinished carved stones (my grandmother was a sculptor). The entire body of Stone’s Throw included paintings, drawings, sculpture, a sound piece, and a 16mm film shot with artist Mary Simpson.
While we were filming, we also recorded all of our actions during the making of the film.
When I began to edit the film, I realized that the sound was too much for the film, and I was interested in making a film about sound without any actual sound - although sound actions were a visible presence, inviting the audience to build the sound in their mind.
The accompaing sound piece - Distance Piece - consisted of local elements: cars and birds, the actions during the filming – Mary speaking, myself tapping stones, the sounds of the camera, bowing a cymbal, tapping a cymbal,stones tapping together, etc.
Distance Piece is essentially a series of processed field recordings with an added structured element in the form of electric guitar notes whose notes were determined by a score based on the vowel structure of a text, written by Henry Moore (the sculptor), that my grandmother had taped to her studio wall.
In 2011, the film and sound were both presented at the Sculpture Center in Long Island, New York. Distance Piece was playing outside of the museum, while striations played silently in one of the dark underground spaces.Striations, the film, has a duration of 6 minutes and runs in a loop. The film unabashedly gleans inspiration from
Dennis Oppenheim’s early films, Gary Beydler’s film hand held day, and an early film by Jess Collins that suggesteda victorian magic lantern show. Mastered by Chihei Hatakeyama.

多くのミュージシャンから絶大なリスペクトを受ける米スティーブ・ロデンによる音作品。彫刻家ヘンリー・ムーアの引用文を音へと変換（ジャケにあるのが譜面）した全１曲。ゆったりと反復するギター音が、まるで波紋となって遠い彼方へと消えゆくような心地良さ。一方で、耳を澄ませば記録された石を叩く音など、無数の小さな音が空間に広がっていきます。美術家ならではの斬新なアプローチが素敵です。

♦「Striations」スティーブ・ロデンによる作品解説 :
「本作は、私が以前製作したStone’s throwという作品群の中の１つである。彫刻家であった祖母がこの世を去り、ちょっとしてから彼女の工房を訪れ、まだ製作途中の石を持ち帰ったのだが、その未完成の姿は、自然物と彫刻作品の間をさまよっている状態で、これらの石に触発されStone’s throwの作品作りを始めた。それらはペインティング、ドローイング、彫刻、楽曲、アーティストであるMary Simpsonと一緒に撮影した16mmフィルムにも及ぶ。このフィルム撮影時には、私たちが製作最中の音も録音したが、後からいらない事に気づき、最終的には音を含まないフィルム作品となった。しかし、音を鳴らすような動作は、観る側の脳に音を思い浮かばせることが出来るのである。そして、この時に録音された、猫や犬、撮影時の音（例えば、Maryの話声、私が石を叩く音、カメラの動作音、シンバルを弾いたりポンと叩いたりする音、石同士をカチカチ鳴らした音等）などのフィールドレコーディングに、エレキ・ギターの要素を加えたのが、本作「Striations」である。そのエレキ・ギター音は、祖母の工房の壁に貼ってあった彫刻家ヘンリー・ムーア氏のテキストを元にしており、その母音の構造により、どの音を鳴らすか、ということが決められている。2011年に、これらのフィルムと音作品の両方がニューヨークのSculpture Centerで発表されたが、DistancePiece（音作品）のほうは美術館の外で鳴らされ、Striationsと名付けられたフィルム作品のほうは、建物の奥の暗いスペースで6分間のループ映像として、ひっそりと上映されました。」

■Profile

Steve Roden (Los Angeles,1964) lives and works in Pasadena, California. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, writing, sound, film/video and performance. Much of his work begins with something someone else has made: be it a postcard from Walter Benjamin’s archives, a 1964 Domus magazine or issue 85 of Green Lantern Comics. His working process includes both found and self-made systems that influences the process of making.
Recent activities include: DAAD residency at the Walter Benjamin Archives in Berlin; group exhibition “Silence” at the Menil Collection, Houston; “Rag-Picker”, CRG Gallery, NY; “In-Between a 20 Year Retrospective” at The Armory Center for the arts, Pasadena, CA; Chinati Residency, Marfa, TX. Civitella Ranier residency, Italy. In 2008, Roden directed a re-visioned version of Alan Kaprow’s “18 happenings in 6 parts” at LACE in conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (LACE). From 1978-1982, Roden was the singer for the LA punk band, “Seditionaries”. Since 1993, he has released over 40 solo recordings on various independent record labels. Rodenhas representationwith gallery Susanne Vielmetter LA Projects, Los Angeles, and CRG Gallery, New York.

1964年米ロス・アンジェルス生まれのサウンド/ビジュアルアーティスト。彼の作品はペインティング、ドローイング、彫刻、書物、音、フィルムやビデオそしてパフォーマンスと多岐に渡る。ロデンの多くの作品は、例えばWalter Benjamin Archives のポストカードであったり、1964 年出版のDomus Magazine, Green Lantern Comics の８５号目など第三者が製作したものを発端にしている。またロデンは作品制作において、制作過程そのものに影響をもたらすような自ら創作した装置やオブジェクトを使用。1980 年代後半から美術家として活動する彼だが、近年の主な活動はWalter Benjamin Archives でのDAAD レジデンシー（ベルリン）、Menil Collection でのグループ展「Silence」（ヒューストン）、CRG Gallery での「Rag-Picker」展（ニューヨーク）など世界各地でコンスタントに作品を発表している。音楽方面では、1978 年から1982 年までLA のパンクバンドSeditionaries のボーカリストとして活躍し、1993 年以降は様々なインディペンデント・レーベルから40 作品以上のソロ・アルバムを発表している。また美術家として、ロス・アンゼルスのSusanne Vielmetter LA Projects ギャラリー、ニューヨークの
CRG Gallery に所属をしている。
