'This Flower' by Nadia Cripps

Thank you for listening to my collaboration with Cts on 50/90. 50/90 is a songwriters site which invites songwriters to create 50 compositions in 90 days. CTS heard my music and he kindly offered to collaborate on it. Craig suggested a spoken word to accompany the music.

CTS: "After some thinking and listening, I remembered a few poets from my studies at VCU and found The Flower, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. I made a minor adjustment by replacing "the" with "this" to give more focus to the flower. I also created an additional stanza. Afterwards I took time to compose the string and bass sections. And the final product is what you're about to hear."

Lyrics

Once in a golden hour
I cast to earth a seed.
Up there came a flower,
The people said, a weed.

To and fro they went
Thro’ my garden-bower,
And muttering discontent
Curs’d me and my flower.

Then it grew so tall
It wore a crown of light,
But thieves from o’er the wall
Stole the seed by night.

Sow’d it far and wide
By every town and tower,
Till all the people cried,
‘Splendid is this flower.’

And yet those who saw
The aesthetic and awed
At the beauty and splendor
This flower did render,
Still it be this flower is lonely.
