Despina by My Neptune

My Neptune’s sound evolves as the humans within it do. Despina, the band’s debut EP, is a sonic photograph of these 5 musicians, taken in spring 2024. The songs in this photo weave through worlds of quiet darkness, freezing in deep space, vaporizing as they pass by the sun. Slow growth, momentary destruction, layers of rock, dust, ice accumulating into a blue sphere spinning through the black.

Recorded live at House of 1000Hz, the 9th Ward New Orleans studio of celebrated recordist Andrew ‘Goat’ Gilchrist, these songs breathe heavily as sounds crescendo and retreat, reflecting the churning hearts of the musicians at work. Capturing this ‘never the same twice’ kind of dynamism—the output of 5 minds that interact like asteroids—was not a simple matter, but the warm grace of Mr. Gilchrist created a pocket of gravity in which these elements could coalesce.

Despina is Neptune’s 3rd closest moon, created from the fragments of other moons long-destroyed. The record that bears its name is built from the elements of Kate Baxter’s celestial songwriting, fused by the heat of her bandmates’ molten cores. A life in New Orleans is described in these songs, sung from break-of-dawn barrooms and under the night-blooming jasmine, all while that city at the edge of earth and water spins through deep space.

Birthed from a feral creativity during late nights in a French Quarter attic apartment, My Neptune grew like a melancholy child, finding a voice while sitting quietly in the dark. Their aesthetic is anchored in New Orleans’ broken streets, bringing a somber comfort like dark velvet to weary ears.
