Dedications by Sullow

Mossy Tapes is proud to present 'Dedications' by Sullow, the improvising trio of Jacken Elswyth, Daniel S. Evans and Joshua Barfoot of Shovel Dance Collective. The recording features two pieces recorded live at Cafe OTO in 2023 supporting 'Sun City Girls’ Sir Richard Bishop.
Having developed a hivemind connection cultivated through hours of exploration and improvisation the recordings are both by complete chance (or not?) the same length, journeying through the fringes of traditional music. Delicate strings interweave with undulating drones, building and falling in spirals around the listener, invoking visions of remote landscapes and forgotten rituals.

''The tape is named in dedication to the late great Brian Wilson and Sly Stone, whose inspiration and influence we feel massively. The former whose passing we found out about just after our last gig playing recently with the brilliant Eric Chenaux, around the time of naming this tape.''

Sullow are the improvising trio of Jacken Elswyth, Daniel S. Evans and Joshua Barfoot of Shovel Dance Collective. Inflected and informed by the traditional material that’s mutated within the larger group, they negotiate an improvisation that has been variably described as ‘farmyard’, ‘rodeo’ and made of ‘only ornamentations’. Repeated patterns rise and fall over dense bursts of momentary composition, that evoke the spirit of british and old time folk sessions as much as the percussive nature of flamenco and the wild melodic form of bagpipe music.
