Operation Solomon from 2021 Demo by Moon Phase
Operation Solomon was the largest of three covert military operations that took place during the 1980s and 90s. These operations were carried out in conjunction with the Israeli military, AAEJ (American Association for Ethiopian Jews), and the U.S. State Department. Operation Solomon transported over 14,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel in order to escape regional instability and famine caused by the Ethiopian Civil War of 1974-1991. However, Ethiopian Jews became subjects of discrimination in Israel on the basis of their language, heritage, and religious practices. This has left them disproportionately represented in terms of unemployment and juvenile delinquency as well as victimization in cases of racially motivated crimes.
This song touches on the themes of racial violence and institutional oppression that are present in this historical instance, as well as in other instances of settler states. The history of colonial and racial injustice is extremely complex and we do not intend to water down the circumstances suffered by any marginalized groups. Our only intent is to condemn racial violence through artistic expression and to bring awareness to the conditions of apartheid.
