Why is it so hard to say the words that feel so big?
They catch inside my breath, defined in practice
But preaching takes a confidence, a competence in walking on love’s line
And falling right on time

How can we be satisfied by acts that seem so small?
A coffee and a thank you card feel lavish.
But loving is a work of art, a masterpiece of madness,
And gentle as the first line drawn.

Why must I feel sad to cry a well of things I miss?
My tender heart is strengthened by the absence
The time away shows what we’ve learned,
Exposes bridges built and burned
And what remains we can’t discern
Until the day we drive familiar roads.
