Dad was suffering from increasing dementia. To give Mum some respite he went into Old Gates nursing home which with it's locked doors and echoing corridors was reminiscent of "One flew over the cuckoo's nest".
It was his 90th birthday and he kept telling us how the Yanks would wait at the river.
Fortunately he was more settled when he was at Sandybrook.
I wrote most of this back then and, although sad, it was worth finishing.
