Tension by Mike Dickson
Fourteen years after the last bombs dropped, we went back to the old site where the remains of the power generators lay. Fallen chimneys and cracked buildings. Piles of coal and fuel from the old days and disused, abandoned railway lines that used to cross the country taking the gift of power from one place to the next, lighting the country and warming the home.
Now all we have are darkness and cold, with the rain never giving up and the soot and the dirt sticking to every surface that you can touch. All hope is now gone. We'll never rebuild what we have lost. We're worse off than never having it: we know now what we did have and what we no longer have and have no idea how to get it back. The finest minds are all dust and the leaders that promised us so much from defiance in the face of impossible odds have disappeared.
This is the true nature of hopelessness. Soon we'll have to kindle the fire again, though how it will light without shelter or even a roof is something we can never tell. And also...
...why are the pylons still standing? And why did that one just move towards me?
