Obelisk by Mike Dickson
It stands alone, cold and far away. Something that represents something to someone, but no one knows what or why any more.
Sometimes we went to visit it when we were younger. The words were obscured by the weather wearing down the soft stone and spreading the bitter yellow lichen. Back then we were sure it all meant something. And then we stopped thinking about it, because we became adults and had to think about better things like house prices and the government and new cars and binge watching box sets.
One day, one of us noticed that it had just disappeared when we were not looking. No one knew why or when it happened.And still no one knew what it was there for, or for who. Some time soon there will be no one who remembers it at all.
And if we cannot remember it, then it did not happen. That's what the truth is.
