Nation by Mike Dickson

I think I'm the only one left. I don't know why I am writing this. There's no audience any more.

The animals are slowly coming back. I saw foxes again last night. And some cats are bigger than others. There are rats everywhere.

No shortages of food for the time being, but I suppose I will have to rely on tins and bottled water.

The nights are the worst. They come long and so dark. I'd never really seen stars before today. There are so many of them. I cannot see them but I heard them moving. Through the overgrown plants and over the hard surfaces.

Time passes but I don't know how much or even why I bother to measure it. I am doing this for others, only I don't know who or where they are. I avoid these thoughts. I pass time by reading through deserted libraries. Who made all of this mess? What day is it? How long has gone by? Months? A year already?

Sometimes I sit up on the top of the tower and look out across the city. At first I was looking for life. Then I stopped and just looked for decay. Or for animals approaching.

Yesterday I thought I heard a phone ringing. I heard it again today. It's coming from the white office block to the south. I'll head there tomorrow. If I can avoid the predators.
