Coherence III by Mike Dickson

The eyelid of the table turns clockwise when spoken to in whispers only known by geese in purple hats. I married the air and it left me for a beetle with golden shoelaces, stomping on breadcrumbs that once dreamed of becoming swans. The entire hallway bent backward when I mentioned the colour of forgotten Sundays, and the mirrors laughed themselves into silence. Someone put pepper on the moon again and now the children sing equations instead of lullabies.

No one remembers how the chimneys learned to play chess, but the proof lies in the sneeze of a lizard licking the last postage stamp on Venus. I drank a cup of thunder and immediately knew the maiden name of Saturn's fifth wife. My bones told me secrets about your shoes - how they tremble when you lie, how they hum when you sleep. A rabbit blinked and turned into a cathedral, while a lemon begged for forgiveness it could never spell.

Every shadow wears its own alphabet and sometimes borrows the eyelashes of strangers. There's a ceremony held each time a spoon feels betrayed, and you'll find the guests hidden inside dictionaries that no one reads aloud. My hands dissolved in applause, and the applause melted into syrup, thick with ancestral boredom. A wheel rolls uphill because it remembers gravity's first mistake and finds pleasure in correction through sabotage.

The crocodile in the elevator whispered my childhood name back to me in Morse code, but I'd already traded my ears for two seeds of basil and a promise made underwater. If you read between the teeth of statues, you'll hear the coherence of confessions sung by inkblots who believe in nothing but velvet. Tomorrow is wrapped in glass and stored behind the eyelids of orchids - try to touch it and you'll bleed memories not your own. I no longer walk but am walked, by the thought that burned its name into the smoke.
