ZigZag Moderne by Miesian

ZigZag Moderne, the fourth release for Miesian, deceptively embodies the brutalist aesthetic through it’s raw, minimalist sound, contrasting with the sleek, angular tension of the Art Deco sub-style, Zigzag Moderne and the shadowy tension of film noir.

Abrupt dynamic shifts and unconventional harmonies, mingle with a trumpet's blaring, often dissonant melodies cutting through the mix like exposed rebar, providing stark, bold statements over the driving rhythm section. The stand-up bass, recorded with emphasis on its low-end and natural resonance, lays down repetitive, walking lines, mimicking a skyscraper’s monolithic foundation, while the drums focus on complex, syncopated rhythms, with all instruments incorporating elements of industrial noise, experimental beat breaking, reverb and delay.

The overall experience is a captivating journey through an urban landscape of jagged decay and structural elegance, reminiscent of a rain-slicked, post-war metropolis where danger lurks around every sharp, geometric corner, blending the unfettered emotion of free improvisation with the rigid, imposing scale of monumental architecture.
