DISTRACTION by SENSORY COMPLEX

This performance at the Spartanburg County Public Library was designed to accompany their 6th Annual Juried Exhibition. Rather than performing conventional songs or instrumental pieces, JAVI FLORES chose to present a quasi-comical musical performance on the theme of "distraction."

For nearly two hours as a couple hundred or so people wandered in and out of the exhibit FLORES kept a keyboard drone and rhythmic guitar loop going and did pretty much anything but play guitar: he read a classic of leftist, working-class literature, took notes on spectators' behavior, chatted with spectators, ate and drank, and did pretty much anything to avoid playing the guitar, only occasionally striking a note or sounding a two-note motif, sometimes throwing trash at the instrument or rolling a bearing down its strings for a streaky psychedelic noise.

The piece was performed in two sections, here split into 10 tracks for Bandcamp uploading. A root/fifth (E/B) dyad was held down with Lego pieces on a 1980s Casiotone keyboard. Fender Jazzmaster was placed on a stand, only briefly worn with a shoulder strap and attacked in the expected manner.
