The Polish-born, Swedish-based trombonist has created a moving and tranquil work of art that represents the best of modern European jazz.
Michał Tomaszczyk has been a fixture in the
jazz world for years, most notably as the lead
trombonist for the Swedish Norrbotten Big
Band. Since breaking out with the Fryderyk
Award (Polish Grammy) winning album
‘Sketches From The North’, he has been
building momentum as a solo artist. His latest album is the full realization of his potential as both an instrumentalist and composer, bringing together some of the top talents in the genre to create an album of rare beauty.
Michał and company begin the proceedings in style on the laid back opener ‘Equal Dignity’. His strength as a composer is showcased immediately, with a memorable ‘A’ section that will instantly resonate with listeners. The tune builds in energy, allowing the all-star rhythm section of bassist Michał Jaros and drummer Sebastian Kuchczyński to shine.
The title track captures serene seaside landscapes, bolstered by an imaginative accompaniment from pianist Aga Derlak, who consistently shines as a soloist. The hypnotic ‘Dilemmas’ is an ideal template for Michał’s imaginative improvisation, while album highlight ‘Tints’ shows Michał’s synergy with flugelhornist Robert Majewski. ‘My Song of Hope’ and ‘The New One’ are equally compelling, featuring notable contributions from saxophonist Przemysław Florczak.
‘Zadora’ is named after Michał’s dearly departed Aunt Elżbieta Zadora-Zuzelska, a noted painter, photographer. Few of the album’s nine tracks serve as a tribute to the woman whose artistic soul made an indelible impact on Michał.
Michał and his collaborators have created an album that encapsulates all the best things about modern jazz. Michał’s skill on the trombone, valve trombone, and flugabone will be appreciated right up until the closing notes of ‘Breath Of Tranquility’, just as the entirety of 'Zadora’ will be cherished by jazz enthusiasts across the globe.
