I often find myself improvising on the piano in the quiet hours of the evening and these days there’s a very simple calming, meditative motif I keep coming back to when I play. I started recording those improv sessions and often let the tape run for more than an hour at a time. Out of all those takes, I kept my favourite 4 minutes and 48 seconds.
The continuous process of discovery you experience when improvising is still fascinating to me. You start with the seed of an idea not knowing what you’ll find on the other side and somehow, something completely new with a life of its own is born.
