right there next to mine.

gave the contract another look.
the man didn't seem like a crook:
sharp, white smile
and shiny shoes,
tall and handsome.
"sign on the dotted line," he said.
"everything will be fine.
the boilerplate
really don’t apply
to people like you,
sanctified by the silver rule."
i sat there like a fool
til I realized
i must recite
the words I'd learned.

"i deserve what is mine. mine, mine, mine.
those with nothing have brought that on themselves.
God hates their kind."
i didn’t know yet.
i didn't mean no harm.

just a legal way
for me to spill the blood required
for our ritual.
and though it may seem cruel,
history's a horror show.
