sumac, thistle, open space.
destruction's path is my estate.
a little dying every day

i raise the harvest to my lips.
the pear feels soft, its flesh is crisp.
fragrant sweetness rushes out
and turns to ash inside my mouth.
cinders squeak between my teeth.
i eat this plant to feed this meat.
Earth is stuck in sliding time.
i scan the hills for shapes unkind.

but reverence I will confess.
i cross myself and watch my step,
