Moss Carder from Humble by Mark Ferguson

The first of three recordings (tracks 12–14), made during a week-long trip to the Hebridean island of South Uist in August 2019.

Here, a Moss Carder Bee (Hebridean variant ssp. agricolae) forages through wildflower-rich machair habitat. It took days of effort in very challenging weather conditions to find this subspecies; when I finally recorded this lone worker, I did so on the lee side of a large sand dune, such was the force of the prevailing south-westerly wind. This was the only successful encounter I had with a Hebridean Moss Carder during my seven days on South Uist.
