Lyrics
I wish I could live there with you
In a sweet country cottage on a hill with a view of the sea
A house made of stone, slate and wood
That we could leave to our children and their children’s children
Oh wouldn’t that be a nice dream
Right next to a beautiful stream
Of clear running water come down from the mountains
Snowmelt cold where the salmon swim boldly back home
Through a nice little town with trees all around
Where buses and trains stop at least twice a day
Where a hospital helps us from cradle to grave and patches us up when we bleed
Where the folk of the town have enough for their needs
CH: But here we are in the real world
Of concrete, corruption and fear
Is it any wonder my daydreams are spent
Everywhere else except here?
Where we all try our best but the rules are against us
Where we see with our own eyes daily injustice
Consumers are all that we are to them
Our leaders who treat us with callous contempt
So I don’t think there’s anything wrong
With wanting to live in a folk song
So on Sundays we might go and sing at the church of our choice
In God I don’t believe but our voices sound heavenly there
The sound of community rings true in our ears
Society sees that we’re all parts of the same thing
Where the workers get fair recompense and the rich know they’re lucky
And a well-meaning phrase like “the common good” makes perfect sense
Oh wouldn't that be a fine place we’d be proud to call home?
Where we choose our own leaders on merit alone
As nature intended like fine healthy food grown with care
Would you mock me for saying I wish that we could live there?
