This is an anthology album that represents part of my musical journey over many years.
My daughter, Dawn Herron, was born when I was 19 years old. When I think of my past experiences, including a life of music, Dawn is always a pivotal part of the story. Over our lifetime she became my collaborator and closest friend. Seven of the 10 songs in this anthology began with her lyrics inspiring me to write the music.
When you listen to these songs, you will hear Dawn’s humor and vibrancy and profound awareness of the emotions we all live through. We discussed ideas for songs often, and she endeavored to write lyrics that would resonate for both of us.
“Seduction” is about passion and sexuality with a biblical reference.
“Je T’aimerais” is a romantic sentiment of love. Dawn spent a considerable amount of time in France, and spoke French fluently.
Her lyrics for the songs “In Case Of Love”, “Wolf" and “Small Stuff” are examples of her wit and humor. “Your Refrain” is a song we wrote after a devastating loss. And “Touch” is a romantic song of love and personal struggle.
I collaborated with my friend, Lisa McDonald, who wrote the lyrics to “Never Leave Your Side”. And I chose to include this song for its sheer happiness and positivity.
I wrote the music and lyrics for “Things Could Be Better”.
“The Dove & The Bourbon” was co-written with my son-in-law, Len Gambla.
Music is very often revelatory. A glimpse of the Inner being of the author.
These 10 songs that span a decade of my musical journey included many supportive relationships. Michael Beasley stepped into my life in 2015, believed in me, and has acted as my dear friend and executive producer throughout these years. My friend and fellow musician, Paul Lindbergh was consistently encouraging me to write and record. Brian Bromberg produced and performed on my Good Thing album. He influenced me to continue recording with the focus on original music. And for those musicians and engineers, Bill Cunliffe, Paul Tavenner, Bob Sheppard, Dean Taba and Michael Surprenant, (to name a few) who contributed during the production of these recordings, I hold an abiding gratitude and appreciation.
There are many of my original songs that were not included on this compilation, which, dear listener, I hope to remind you of at a later date.
But before that, we plan to release a new album in 2025 of music as yet not heard, including some interpretations of my favorite cover songs.
I’ve been living in Hawaii for nearly 50 years. This is a poignant and passionate place on Earth. Life experience shapes our musical and artistic expressions. Our physical environment, the nature surrounding us, is where we pluck sounds and thoughts from to create the finished song.

Maggie Herron’s 2020 release, YOUR REFRAIN, is a dedication to her daughter and writing partner, Dawn Herron, who tragically passed away April 5, 2020. Winner of the 2021 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Jazz Album Of The Year, the album features 7 of the mother/daughter’s collaborations. Maggie resides on Hawaii's Big Island. She is currently working on her 2022 album for a spring release. Aloha!
