Two jazz musicians I idolized passed away in 2021; both had names starting with a "C".
Chick Corea: world-famous, highly-influential 20th century pianist. The neo-classical renaissance man. Flawless touch and musical phrasing. Inventive and memorable melodies. A big part of my childhood as a developing musician– elements of his writing can be heard in latter compositions on this album.
Carlton Jackson: local Portland legend. No-nonsense drumming, straight up and down. Inventive, yet humble and introspective. Always gave other musicians room to breathe. Deep and rooted time feel, and incredibly welcoming presence.
Both men departed this planet too soon, but they left us all the tools to build our own musical fortresses and celebrate their excellence.
I tried to channel Chick when writing the piece, and Carlton when playing the piece.
