Clean by M4TR

Clean is a song of reckoning, release, and renewal. Written from the perspective of the narrator addressing an abusive man, it embodies the moment when a woman walks away for good—free from the shadows of control, reclaiming her life. Inspired by the divorces and breakups of women I know, it’s about breaking cycles, shedding the past, and emerging stronger. But Clean is also a metaphor. The abused woman is nature, pushing back after centuries of exploitation. During the COVID pandemic, when humanity retreated, skies cleared, rivers ran fresh, and wildlife reemerged as if reclaiming what had been stolen.

The music follows that emotional arc—starting dark and brooding before lifting into something triumphant. The verses cut deep, calling out the damage inflicted: “You were obscene / She was pure / You, the disease / And she, the cure.” But as the song progresses, she rises. “Now she’s clean, evergreen / She’s moving on without you.” It’s a cathartic release—freedom from destruction, whether from a toxic relationship or a civilization that believes it can outlast nature.

Musically, Clean is influenced by Beck, Tears for Fears, and Peter Gabriel, blending electronic textures with a cinematic, almost folk-horror tension. It also draws from the unsettling beauty and retribution themes of Midsommar, mirroring nature’s quiet vengeance. Released in 2020, it’s both personal and universal—about women who say “enough,” about nature reclaiming what was lost, and about the truth that, given enough time, the world will heal—with or without us.
