Boy by M4TR
"Boy" is a song about my son at age 9, a moment I knew I had to capture before it disappeared—because childhood, like a melody, fades out as quickly as it fades in. Written in 2018, it reflects the awe of watching him grow, where Civil War reenactments, Harry Potter spells, and Star Wars lore weren’t just stories but guiding myths. It’s about the hope that, as he becomes a man, he will do great things—not by following my path, but by forging his own.
The line "Would you mind if I was named after you?" is a reflection of that hope, a twist on the tradition of fathers passing down their names. My name, AJ, stands for Abu Jibran—Jibran’s father—because he has always come first. Musically, Boy is a piano ballad that crescendos into an arena-sized anthem, influenced by Coldplay, Elton John, and David Gilmour. And at its core, it’s a wish—that he will always be a force for good, that he will stand for something, that he will "be the Resistance, the last hope of the galaxy"— in the way that matters most: by carrying integrity, courage, and ethical principles into the world.
