Italian Trio Luz release new album “Encelado”
Luz are back on the scene with their new album Encelado
out on Auand Records


Light and darkness, outer space, deserts, poetry, science, myth: this is Encelado (Auand), Luz’s second studio album (Giacomo Ancillotto on guitar, Igor Legari on double bass and Federico Scettri on drums).

Nine original compositions make the tracklist of this “interstellar” album, connecting perspectives and reflections around stars and cosmos. The favored point of view here belongs to human beings: from Planet Earth, they can star-gaze in search of the mystery of beginnings. Ranging from space shuttles that can send a man to orbit, Luz’s narrative balances science and magic, and can’t resist a touch of self-deprecation. A hint to this opposition between realism and magic can also be found in the album cover, Tres hombres con sillas, a work of art donated to the band by Chilean painter Juan Martinez Bengoechea.

The journey starts from Soyuz!, a tribute to the glorious Soviet spacecraft, an ode to science, machines, and human brilliance, penned by double bass player Igor Legari. Atacama moves the focal point to the dry South American desert; Ground Control celebrates David Bowie’s Space Oddity on its 40th anniversary; Hum evokes the universe’s deep, continuous whisper. These tracks highlight how Luz’s music approach often follows a circular structure which is far from linearity, rather fluctuating between acceleration and slowing down. Their writing blends with improvisation, while the melodic lines increase in a relentless role-exchange among the band members. This role game is mirrored in the album title, Encelado, the giant son of Gaia and Uranus – according to the myth, he declared war to the Olympian Gods, but this is also the name of one of the 64 satellites around Saturn.

Luz take their name from a tiny bone also called “core of immortality” and have been touring Europe since 2012 performing at Festivals, radio and TV shows. Their music is also featured in short films and documentaries. The new album, recorded at Antonio Castiello’s studio, is available on vinyl and CD (see merch).
