Posidonia by Llyn Y Cwn
Drawing from the stark beauty and elemental force of his native Anglesey, North Wales, Llyn Y Cwn continues his exploration of oceanic themes with Posidonia—a deeply immersive suite of dark ambient compositions that echo the spirit of his earlier work, Du Y Moroedd. This release forms a natural companion piece, delving further into the liminal spaces between land, sea, and sound.
Each track is sculpted from field recordings gathered along the British coastline, transformed into rich, textural soundscapes that evoke the vastness and mystery of the deep. ‘Dale Dawn’ captures the delicate chorus of seabirds at sunrise, recorded from a floating pontoon in Dale, Pembrokeshire. ‘Pebble’ layers the chaotic rhythm of waves crashing over a Dorset cobble beach—thousands of stones colliding in a granular symphony. ‘Doppler Current Profiler’ is built around the slowed pulse of a 600kHz acoustic doppler sonar, its heartbeat-like thrum conjuring the eerie stillness of submerged worlds.
Critics have praised Posidonia for its atmospheric depth and emotional resonance. Avant Music News describes the release as “deep ambient music in the truest sense,” noting how it “explores oceanic themes” with a “dark, immersive” approach. Side-Line Magazine highlights the “cinematic, dark-ambient, experimental” nature of the work, calling it “a slow descent into the blackened watery abyss, where light cannot reach” SIDE-LINE MAGAZINE.
Listeners have drawn comparisons to the likes of R. Rich and B. Lustmord, with one Bandcamp supporter writing: “These tracks are filled with atmosphere and otherworldly emotion… the perfect soundtrack when you're drowning in the deep abyss”.
Posidonia is available as part of the split LP Sargo / Posidonia with Sleep Research Facility on Cold Spring Records. A limited edition vinyl and CD release features bespoke artwork for each side, underscoring the duality and depth of this collaborative journey into the sonic deep.
