This song criticizes people for lying about their situation to gain money and status. The first verse is about my own struggles with addiction, depression and schizophrenia. More importantly, it's about becoming tired of watching people front and then benefit off this painful experience. Since the rise of Emo Rap, I feel like I've seen an explosion of depression for profit. Representation is amazing but I question how genuine some of these artists are.
The second verse is centered around violence. The story told throughout this section is true. The verse starts with me speaking violence on a friend. Back in 2017, I ran a house venue with one of my college buddies. That venue destroyed our friendship as he was stealing from and over booking my house. During my shows, I would frequently sit outside on my step and smoke. Both to run door and to get a break from the chaos inside. I was sitting outside talking to my friend about wanting to beat up my venue partner, when suddenly there was a drive-by across the street. We ran inside to avoid the shots, I saw the car and everything. The entire show obviously stopped and we watched silently as the cops came. No one could leave because everyone in the house was underage and the block was full of cops.
Just as it is wrong for others to co-op my experience with mental illness, it is wrong for me to speak violently in order to gain money in status because I not living that life. Too often in rap people lie about having guns, pushing drugs and killing people. That lifestyle is dangerous and painful making it incredibly misguided for so many to be lying about it.
The final section is centered around the lyric "can't hold us down". In my eyes trauma is something that links so many of us regardless of background. It's something very mutually understood and its something that holds so many of us from our full potential. The lyrics in this final section are hopeful. Hopeful for my future (obviously) but hopeful for so many effected systemic and generational issues
