I haven't recorded covers for a long time, but I got the urge to learn Neil Peart's "Pieces of Eight" after he passed away in January.. and then after learning it, I decided to do a couple more, all songs that I grew up with in the 70s and 80s that had an impact on me.. all of them Canadian compositions and all of these were learned by ear.

"MAPL" is the four parts that determines a Canadian song for CRTC regulations - music/artist/producer/lyrics

1. "Boob Tube" written by Eva Everything

2. "Danger Bay" written by Don Gillis

From the Canadian TV production - I watched a lot of this show as a kid and it's one of the greatest tv theme songs.

3. "Hand in hand" written by Frances Ruffino
Zaza Sound Productions Limited (SOCAN)

This track was used as the closing theme to the kids TV show Size Small, another show I watched a lot of in the mid 80s. The host, Miss Helen Lumby, would write songs for the show, often taking instrumental library cuts as the backing tracks.

4. "Pieces of Eight" written by Neil Peart
Desmodromic Music Publishing (SOCAN)

A very influential record for me, this song was released in 1987 on a Modern Drummer magazine flexi-disc. It's not an understatement that Neil's drumming changed my life and I've always wanted to learn this song and 35 years after first hearing it, I have. It's very hard!

5. "Why don't they look to the stars" written by Sylvia Tyson

From the animated Nelvana special 'A Cosmic Christmas' - a beautiful song that has always been a favourite.

6. "Bunny Beat" written by by Daigle/Edmond/Montpetit

Originally recorded by the Bunny Boppers, it's probably the most obscure track here. This song was included on a 45rpm record inside a box of chocolate also shaped like a record at Easter in either 1981 or 1982 in Canada only. Featuring the guest vocals of my good friend Grace Macklin.
