For many music lovers, the car is the perfect listening environment. It can be enclosed or open, loud or soft, live or dead. It can allow you to relax and unwind or let you get hyped and ready to party. The car sound system was a badge of honor. Spending weekends wiring speakers and amps to let your sounds knock at the park. A case full of tapes or CD’s tucked under the seat. Even when you weren’t in the car you still represented while walking around with your radio face in your hand as a signal to everyone that you had that bump in your ride.
The music you played was the most important part of the equation. For a lot of us it was the funk that set us apart from the bass music crowd & the hip hop heads. Be it the old school boogie jams of Slave & George Clinton, the New Jack Swing of Guy & Bobby Brown, or the Purple funk of Prince & The Time. Funky music was the statement that showed you were different.
This album is about the funk we ride to. The funk that makes you put the windows down and turn the volume up as you ride thru the park headed to your cousin n’ dem cookout & they know it’s you when you pull up because only you would be playing that funk shit!
Car stereos today aren’t what they used to be. Stock systems no longer have tape or CD players. Everything is digital and streamed. People listen to more podcasts & audiobooks than music during their daily commutes. But if you hold that nostalgia for riding out to some jams on a homemade mixtape, I hope this album finds a place in your heart & mind and takes you back to being in the drivers seat with one hand on the wheel and the other on the volume knob.
