This Place by Late Frequencies
In 1996, Sandia National Laboratories published a report outlining what kinds of warnings should be in place to warn far-future generations of the dangers of nuclear waste on sites where such waste is buried. Because nuclear waste has a half-life of 10,000 years, these warnings need to be capable of communicating danger non-linguistically, as human languages of nowadays are highly unlikely to remain in their same forms that far into the future.
The Sandia report proposed several ideas for hostile architecture to be built at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico. The architecture is meant to evoke a sense of dread and danger that would deter sentient life from deterring the site. Included in the report was the following wording:
"This place is a message... and part of a system of messages... pay attention to it!
Sending this message was important to us. We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture.
This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here.
What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger.
The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us.
The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours.
The danger is to the body, and it can kill.
The form of the danger is an emanation of energy.
The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited."
This message conveys what the architecture is intended to non-linguistically invoke. The architecture is yet to be built.
