Agua is the first section of “Water” part I in the Elements Suite, written by Kune and featured on the new album Universal Echoes (Aril 2023), as a tribute to the four elements that make up the cosmos. Water is life, water washes and purifies. All cultures throughout history have known the central part that water plays and thus celebrate and thank the water for sustaining life. In this piece, Kune draws on the different musical languages of its members to sing together a celebration of water. Agua (water in Portuguese) starts with an invocation to the sirens (sereia), their songs can be heard in the music the water makes as it flows through rivers and creeks. The tambor de crioula rhythm of Brazil mixes in with funky Afrobeat horns and rhythms, followed by an instrumental break composed by Chinese bamboo flute player Dora Wang.
