이 앨범은 모국어가 아닌 언어로 소통하며 이방인으로서 경험했던 낯섦에서 출발했습니다. 때로는 상대의 말을 온전히 이해하지 못해 단절을 느꼈지만, 비언어적 소통을 통해 인간 고유의 따뜻함을 찾을 수 있었습니다. 특히 3번 트랙 the formosan nacirema의 1분 17초 이후에는 대만에서 진행한 길거리 인터뷰 도중 끊기는 말소리를 통해 이러한 단절의 순간을 음악적으로 표현했습니다.

곡 제목은 대만의 옛 이름 Formosa와, ‘America’를 거꾸로 쓴 Nacirema에서 따온 것으로, 인류학자 호러스 마이너가 제시한 “자기 문화도 타자의 시선으로 보면 낯설어진다”는 문화상대주의적 관점을 담고 있습니다.

이처럼 조각조각의 낯선 소통의 현장 속에서도 인간적 유대를 확인할 수 있다는 메시지를 담았으며, 나아가 여행 속 떠남과 머묾, 특히 흘러가는 것과 끝내 남는 것을 성찰하는 작업이기도 했습니다. 언어적 장벽과 낯섦조차 결국은 인간 본연의 따뜻함과 다정함으로 이어진다는 점을 전하고자 했습니다.


[PREFACE]

This album comes from my experience as a foreigner, where speaking in a non mother language often made it hard to fully understand others and created moments of awkwardness. Track 3, 'the formosan nacirema', especially after 1:17, shows this through interview words that fade in and out, capturing a sense of distance. But even in those breaks, I found the warmth of human connection through non- verbal communication.

The title combines Formosa, the old name of Taiwan, and Nacirema, which is “America” written backward. Anthropologist Horace Miner used the idea of Nacirema to show that even our own culture can feel strange when seen from another’s eyes. My experience connects with this idea, showing that even when communication is broken, people can still find a bond.

Through the traveling experience, I was able to reflect on departing and staying, and especially on what flows and what remains. I wanted to share that even language barriers and feelings of strangeness, in the end, lead back to human connection.

Fragmented Departures는 대만 타이난과 가오슝에서 수집한 소리들로 구성된 앨범이다. 모든 공간이 그렇듯, 이곳 또한 익숙하면서도 생경한 소리들로 이루어져 있다. 그 소리를 따라가다 보면, 듣는 이 역시 잠시 여행자가 된다.

Fragmented Departures is an album based on sounds collected in Tainan and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Like every place, these cities resonate with both the familiar and the unfamiliar. By following these sounds, the listener, too, becomes a traveler—if only for a while.

A collection of spoken and unspoken languages. The unintelligible may feel foreign, yet even within that strangeness, human communication persists.


[Notes]

This project stemmed from cherished memories of drawing comfort from small interviews with city dwellers amid the weight of everyday life.
