Te Kaitiaki is the latest musical offering from NZ artist Kirsten Te Rito.
Featuring five tracks sung exclusively in Te reo Māori, Te Kaitiaki is infused with electronic beats, atmospheric synths and catchy hooks.
In the title track Te Kaitiaki , Kirsten paints the story of a surreal encounter on a beach on new years day. After whispering a waiata (song) and karakia (prayer) for the coming year to Tangaroa - the god of the ocean - a formidable black seal appears and stands in the crashing waves before her leaving her awestruck. The animated story is paired with with modulating synths and pulsing bass lines, helping to convey the excitement of the encounter with the seal, and ultimately Tangaroa.
