King Proteus arrive on the Perth scene as new musical court jesters; debuting their eclectic and dynamic sound with the libido-enthralled exaltation of “Lion”.

The distinct and much-loved signature traits of Australian Underground Rock combine with Travis Brinnand’s soaring vocals, Clayton Brown’s crunchy textured guitars, Dario Jiritano’s velveteen bass motifs, and David Rajendram’s rhythm mayhem - Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Radiohead, Queens Of The Stone Age, Marvin Gaye, and Vulpeck are melted down and lovingly reconstituted with a rambunctious Jazz know-how and a seam of screaming Blues.

Lion is a celebration of carnal euphoria and King Proteus's primal overdrive fastens the celebration to an awe-inspiring rhythm section that highlights beautifully the musicianship of the band, some of whom passed through the hallowed halls of Perth's WAAPA Academy.

The Tarantino Tuxedo remix would sit perfectly within a smoky-noir soundtrack to Kill Bill 3, with its stripped-down cocktail bar croon and Twin-Peaks guitars, One Night Lover (Goddess Ocean Mix) sees the band joyfully ransack the last 50 or so years of genre and soundtrack vibes to create a uniquely west-coast chill-rock, and Post My Rage is a great live-demo snapshot showcasing the raw power of the band in the act of shaping their songcraft.

The lyrical and storytelling prowess of King Proteus is as much of a strength of the quartet as the musical juggernauts they impel; what can be heard especially is the aching yet streetsmart paens to physical and spiritual love, lust, yin and yang, and the perpetual thrill of been alive.
